Repertoire

There will be a curriculum of more than just one piece at a time for most of you. Your listening and review should reflect this as well.

Curriculum will cover the following categories:

Etudes and scales. The power of these cannot be overstated. We have seen a direct correlation. Students who consistently practice etudes and scales improve more quickly. Some of these books include:

  • Doflein
  • Whistler, Introducing the Positions, Vols 1 & 2
  • Scales Plus by William Starr
  • Scale book by Barbara Barber
  • Wohlfahrt
  • Mazas
  • Dont
  • Whistler, Preparing for Kreutzer, Vols 1 & 2
  • Kreutzer
  • Fiorillo
  • Rode
  • Paganini
  • Scale systems by Galamian and Flesch

Concerto repertoire

Small works for violin, also known as virtuoso works

Chamber music: This includes Dolflein books and Bartok duos. They are available at Shar music products. I will be assigning from a graded list of chamber music.

Orchestral music: This assignment will be for mainly older students. I will be working out of Josef Gingold’s orchestral excerpt book, also available at Shar.

Alternative styles: Books to include: Mark O’Connor’s method as well as books by Bob Phillips.

We encourage consistency with your review.  Play old pieces you enjoy so you have time in your practice to just enjoy playing and so you will always have something you can play for anyone like friends and family.
